Board Members

Underwood School Board Members

The six-member Underwood School Board makes policy and oversees the district’s budget, curriculum, personnel and facilities. The group looks out for the best interests of Underwood Public Schools as a whole to ensure the district can effectively serve each and every student.

Citizen-members are elected to at large, four-year terms, which means members don’t represent specific neighborhoods or wards, but the district as a whole. The terms overlap, which means elections are held every two years.

All School Board meetings are open to the public, except for those specifically permitted by law to be closed for discussion of identified issues such as negotiation strategy, litigation or private student or personnel data.

The School Board consists of a chairperson, vice-chair, clerk, treasurer, and two directors.

How long have you lived in Underwood? I grew up here and have been here most of my life (other than being away for college and a couple of years after for jobs out of college).

What is your profession?   CPA

Why are you passionate about education?

Currently, I have three kids in the District ranging from 2nd through 7th grade so their futures are obviously very important to me. That said, I also see things through the lens of a local business owner. Hands down the number one constraint facing business owners in this region across most industries is a lack of help. If we can educate and market to our students at an early age that they can do anything they want and be successful without permanently moving away- it will have a trickle down effect, not just in our community but the region as a whole.

What is one of your favorite memories with students as a school board member? There isn’t one specific memory that sticks out but more so the feeling of pride you see and hear in kids when they let others know where they are from…that’s pretty cool.

1. How long have you lived in Underwood?

22 years

2. What is your profession?

Government Auditor with State of MN

3. Why are you passionate about education?

Our job as parents, a school, and a community is to give each child coming through our doors the opportunity to go into the adult world with the best education based on their needs.

4. What is one of your favorite memories with students as a school board member?

I am proud of our students and staff for the way we help our others and help lift others up. Most recently, we hosted a neighboring school’s homecoming game. There was a player with differing physical needs that had a goal before he graduated, to play in a real football game. Not only did this child get to play, but he was able to score a touchdown! The best part, every single player, home team and away, along with almost every fan in attendance was cheering this child in the whole way. We have great sportsmanship, and we teach kindness. How awesome is it that our Underwood kids understand that scoring a touchdown is not always winning, lifting each other up is the biggest win of all.

How long have you lived in Underwood?

I have lived in the district for 5 years.

What is your profession?

I am an Accounting Instructor and a CPA.

Why are you passionate about education?

I grew up in a household of teachers.  My dad was a high school science teacher and my mom was an elementary teacher, each for 35+ years.  Education was ingrained in me from an early age, watching my parents passionately navigate their education careers.

One of your favorite memories with students as a school board member:

Probably one of my fondest memories with students as a school board member is participating in the 2021 graduation.  It was so fun to see those kids experience the accomplishment of an Underwood education!

How long have you lived in Underwood?

I have lived in the district for 10 years.

What is your profession?

Currently, I am teaching Family and Consumer Science at Kennedy Secondary School, Fergus Falls.

Why are you passionate about education?

As a parent with kids in the school I have a vested interest and feel it is important to be involved. Curriculum, opportunities and safety are of high importance.  It is vital to work as a team to collaboratively create ties between the board and stakeholders-I want to be a voice for parents and students. It is a goal to help provide students with rigorous curriculum and opportunities for growth so when they leave Underwood they can be contributing members of society.

One of your favorite memories with students as a school board member:

I enjoy volunteering in the classroom when possible.

I also enjoy going to concerts, games and activities.  One of my favorite things about the size of our school is how the kids interact with each other-older kids are able to help and be a mentor.

How long have you lived in Underwood?

My family and I live on German Lake just outside Underwood and we love it. We moved to Underwood about three years ago. We did live north of Fergus Falls prior to that. We moved to the area about 7 years ago.

What is your profession?

I work for Otter Tail Power Company. I manage our Sales and Implementation team. Arguably one thing I love most about my job is managing an excellent team of professional energy experts.

Why are you passionate about education?

Education can transform people. It transformed me. Who I am. How hard I work. And how much this world needs us to persist in our passions. When I think about my educational journey. I initially got a 16 on the ACT. I did not have the high school grades to even get into college. Frankly, I didn't even believe I was smart enough to go to college. But when I found my passion I was able to get into community college. I got the grades and coursework necessary to get into a four-year school. I maintained a 3.2 GPA in undergrad, both at community college and four-year, and a 3.6 GPA in grad school. Also, I was able to be very active outside of the classroom in other school activities. Education 100% changed my life for the better and it has the ability to do that for anyone.

One of your favorite memories with students as a school board member:

I just started as a school board member. However, I can recall many memories with teachers and school leadership. One in particular was with my fifth grade teacher. He was my teacher for the last hour of the day in fifth grade. I would typically stay after class where he would help me with reading. We discovered I liked reading science articles. He would 1) consistently take the time and stay late to help me build my reading skills and 2) always find the best science articles of the week that were so interesting. I will never forget his impact.

How long have you lived in Underwood?

I have lived in Underwood my entire life.

What is your profession?

Agriculture

Why are you passionate about education?

I strongly believe we need to provide the students the highest quality of instruction that we can as a district. I also feel that we all need to build a relationship with the students, staff and community. There is no better feeling than seeing a student who might be struggling with something and then all of a sudden- " get it."

One of your favorite memories with students as a school board member:

I really enjoy having student representatives be a part of the school board. They bring excitement when they speak about the good things happening inside the school.
